Sean, He talks briefly about our proclivities for automobiles and homes in the suburbs but maintains focus on his narrative of New Daleville. He does not however chastise the homeowners for choosing to live in the suburbs. That for me was quite important although personally I advocate against it.

Great post. I am , like yourself, very interested in the treatment of suburban sprawl. As you stated, we, as designers, frown on this epidemic, yet many of us can't fight urges to participate by buying a home in an ex-cornfield.

You stated that the book deals with the notion of these developments containing nothing more than cookie cutter "neo traditional" homes. I am curious, however, if Rybczynski addresses the increased reliance on the automobile (and the associated issues such as increased land dedicated to parking, reliance on fossil fuels, etc.) as a result of this lifestyle, which is something I am particularly interested in. Does he take a look at the streetcar suburb or today's mass transit systems for moving people from their home into the urban core?

Again, thanks for the post.
